Residence

We cannot arrange insurance for people resident in America.
We cannot arrange insurance for people resident in their country of nationality unless they are included on a joint life policy with an expatriate.

Payment

Life insurance companies can accept payment monthly or annually by Visa and Master card, standing order and direct debit.

Payout

Expatriate life insurance policies make a one off cash payment in the event of death or terminal illness as long as payment has been maintained.

Insurance types

Level term insurance

Used by expatriates to provide life insurance for a set number of years. Level term insurance is often used to provide financial support for children in the event of a parents death before the children are old enough to provide for themselves.

The cost of level term insurance is fixed at the beginning and does not increase during the term of the policy. Term insurance is an inexpensive option because the benefit is only paid if death occurs during the policy term.

Whole of life insurance

Used by expatriates to provide a cash payment on death at whatever age it occurs. Whole of life insurance can be used to help beneficiaries pay estate inheritance taxes. Due to the inevitable payout whole of life insurance is the most expensive life insurance option.

Decreasing term insurance

Use by expatriates to pay outstanding mortgages loans if they die before the property if paid for. The cash payout reduces roughly in line with the outstanding loan. Decreasing term insurance is less expensive than level term insurance.

Annual renewable insurance

Used by expatriates to insure themselves one year at a time.

Popular with people expatriated for short periods of time. The cost of annually renewable insurance is initially cheap but increases as you get older.

How much life insurance

In our experience most expats are under insured. It is rare to find an expatriate family that could maintain the same standard of living in the event of a parents early death.

The only life insurance many expats have is that provided by their employer and a policy to cover their mortgage. This means if they die their family might receive, at best, 4 times their annual salary. Few young expat families could survive for long on that amount.

The reality

Depending on your ages, number of children and annual income your family may need from 10 to 20 times your annual salary.

Insurance application

When you are ready to apply for insurance we will send you the application forms, as email attachments, and help you with the application process.

To prove your identity and residential address you will need to provide photocopies of your passport and a document showing your residential address. Some insurers need these copies to be verified as true copies of the originals by a solicitor, notary, consulate or embassy.

Once we receive your completed paperwork we will make sure your application is processed as quickly as possible and inform you of any additional requirements.

Medical requirements

Most applicants after their application has been provisionally accepted, will need to complete a medical examination and a blood test with a doctor of their choice.
